AOD-9604 is an experimental synthetic peptide based on amino acids 176–191 from the C-terminal region of human growth hormone. It was originally developed as a potential obesity treatment intended to reproduce certain metabolic effects associated with growth hormone without retaining its full growth-promoting activity.
Laboratory, animal, and human studies have investigated AOD-9604 in relation to fat metabolism and weight management. Early findings generated interest, but later clinical trials failed to demonstrate consistent or clinically meaningful weight loss.
AOD-9604 is not approved by the FDA as a weight-loss medication or for human use.
Growth hormone participates in numerous biological processes, including growth, tissue regulation, glucose metabolism, and lipid metabolism. Researchers isolated its 176–191 region to investigate whether a smaller fragment could influence fat metabolism without producing the broader effects of full-length growth hormone.
Preclinical experiments have examined two primary proposed effects:
Lipolysis: the breakdown of stored triglycerides into fatty acids
Lipogenesis: the metabolic process through which new fat is created and stored
Animal research—particularly studies involving obese mice—reported increased fat breakdown and reduced weight gain under certain experimental conditions. One mechanistic study found that the effect depended partly on beta-3 adrenergic receptors because animals lacking those receptors did not respond in the same manner.
These animal findings provided a rationale for human trials, but they do not prove that AOD-9604 produces reliable fat loss in people.
Research interest: lipid metabolism, beta-3 adrenergic signaling, obesity models, and growth-hormone-fragment pharmacology.
An early 12-week clinical study reported that one treatment group receiving AOD-9604 lost approximately 2.8 kilograms, compared with approximately 0.8 kilograms in the placebo group.
That result generated interest in AOD-9604 as a possible obesity treatment. However, it represented one dose group within an early-stage development program and needed to be reproduced in larger and longer trials.
A subsequent 24-week trial did not demonstrate a significant weight-loss advantage over placebo. Because the larger development program failed to establish adequate effectiveness, development of AOD-9604 as a standalone obesity medication was discontinued.
This is the most important part of the evidence: early trial findings appeared encouraging, but later research did not confirm a consistent clinical benefit.
The available human evidence does not establish that AOD-9604 reliably produces:
Significant weight loss
Targeted fat reduction
Increased metabolic rate
Improved body composition
Preservation of lean muscle
Reduction of visceral fat
Greater calorie expenditure
It is also not supported by evidence comparable to currently approved prescription weight-management medications.
AOD-9604 was designed to avoid the full growth-promoting activity of intact human growth hormone. Available research did not demonstrate the same effects on IGF-1 and glucose regulation commonly associated with full-length growth hormone under the conditions studied.
However, this does not establish that every formulation, exposure level, or route of administration is metabolically risk-free. It also does not prove long-term safety in healthy individuals.
Statements describing AOD-9604 as “non-diabetogenic” or free from growth-hormone-related effects should therefore be limited to the experimental conditions and measurements examined—not treated as universal guarantees.
AOD-9604 has also attracted interest in laboratory and animal research involving cartilage, bone, and osteoarthritis models.
These investigations are separate from the unsuccessful obesity-development program. Preclinical findings involving cartilage cells or animal joints do not establish that AOD-9604 regenerates cartilage, strengthens bones, reduces joint pain, or treats osteoarthritis in humans.
Controlled clinical evidence would be required before making those conclusions.
Research interest: cartilage metabolism, chondrocyte activity, bone biology, and experimental osteoarthritis.
Current research does not establish that AOD-9604:
Targets specific areas of body fat
Reliably increases human fat burning
Produces clinically meaningful long-term weight loss
Raises daily calorie expenditure
Improves body composition in healthy individuals
Preserves muscle during weight loss
Regenerates cartilage or bone in humans
Treats osteoarthritis or joint injuries
Is effective when combined with other research peptides
Is safe for unsupervised or long-term use
The suggestion that its effects could be “enhanced when combined with other therapies” is also speculative unless the particular combination has been evaluated in controlled research.
The human weight-loss results were inconsistent.
The larger 24-week trial failed to demonstrate adequate efficacy.
Long-term safety information remains limited.
Product identity, purity, concentration, and sterility may vary among research materials.
Animal and cell findings do not reliably predict human outcomes.
Safety findings from controlled trials do not guarantee the safety of unapproved commercial preparations.

A lack of appetite suppression does not demonstrate effective fat loss.
AOD-9604 has not been approved as an obesity, fat-loss, cartilage, or joint-health treatment.
AOD-9604 is a scientifically interesting fragment of human growth hormone that demonstrated metabolic activity in animal models and produced an encouraging signal in one early human study.
However, the later 24-week trial failed to confirm a significant weight-loss benefit, and its development as an obesity medication was discontinued. It should therefore not be described as a proven fat-burning, body-recomposition, or targeted-fat-loss compound.
The most accurate conclusion is that AOD-9604 is an experimental growth-hormone fragment with interesting preclinical findings, inconsistent human efficacy data, and incompletely characterized long-term safety.
